Portfolio Tracker — Methodology Handbook
The Portfolio Tracker turns a list of holdings into a live picture of what you own, what it cost, what it is worth now, and how each position is performing. It covers stocks, ETFs, crypto, indices and commodities, with live prices, multi-currency support, on-chain wallet sync, dividends, a tax report and a full analytics console. Everything updates automatically — you just record what you hold.
👉 Open the tracker: calculatorai.app/portfolio-tracker
1. What it tracks
Each holding is one position you own. Beyond the core figures, optional classification fields let you slice and filter the portfolio in the Analytics console (see §4k):
- Symbol — the ticker (e.g.
AAPL,VOO,BTC). Stored uppercase. - Name — optional human label (e.g. "Apple Inc.").
- Type —
Stock,ETF,Crypto,Index,CommodityorOther. This drives which price source is used (see §3). Pick Index for S&P 500 / Nasdaq / Dow etc., or Commodity for gold, silver, oil and the like — a curated picker suggests the common ones. - Quantity — how many shares / coins / units you hold.
- Average cost — your blended cost per unit. This is the number that makes cost basis and gain/loss correct; update it when you add to a position.
- Current price — optional manual override. Leave it empty to let the tracker fetch a live price; set it to pin your own price.
- Account — optional free-text label (e.g. "Brokerage", "Crypto wallet") so one portfolio can span several places.
- Classification (all optional) — Sector (Technology, Energy…), Category (Broad Market, Growth…), Strategy (Core, High Growth…), Asset class (Equity, Alternative…), Region (North America, Global…) and a Target weight % (your intended allocation, used for rebalance-drift in Analytics). Set them once per asset; reuse earlier values with one tap via autocomplete, or assign them to many holdings at once with bulk edit (§4l).
2. The numbers, defined
For one holding:
- Cost basis =
quantity × average cost. What you paid in total. - Market value =
quantity × current price. What it is worth now. - Gain / loss =
market value − cost basis. Unrealized — it is paper profit until you sell. - Gain % =
gain ÷ cost basis × 100. - Allocation % = this holding's market value ÷ total portfolio value. The share of your portfolio this one position represents.
For the whole portfolio (the Overview cards):
- Total value = sum of every holding's market value.
- Invested = sum of every holding's cost basis.
- Total gain / loss = total value − invested, with the matching percent.
- Annualized return (XIRR) = the money-weighted annualized rate of return. Unlike the simple gain %, it accounts for when money went in and out: each buy is a cash outflow on its date, each sell and dividend an inflow, and your current value is treated as a final inflow today. The tracker solves for the yearly rate that makes those dated flows net to zero. This is the number that lets you compare a position held 5 years against one held 6 months fairly — it's what "serious" trackers (Sharesight et al.) report. Shown as "—" until there's at least one buy and one offsetting inflow to solve from.
Currency model
The base storage currency is USD — all holding cost basis, market value and gain/loss are computed in USD, then converted to your display currency at the current FX rate so the whole tracker reads in the currency you pick.
True multi-currency input: each transaction carries its own entry
currency (the currency you actually paid in, e.g. GBP). When you save a
foreign-currency trade, the tracker captures the historical FX rate on the
trade date (entry currency → USD) and stores it on the row. Cost basis is then
price × historical_rate, so a position bought in GBP last year and one bought
in USD this year combine into one correct USD cost basis — and everything still
displays in your chosen currency. Transaction rows show each trade in its own
entry currency (the honest amount you paid); portfolio-level totals are in your
display currency. Legacy trades default to USD at a rate of 1.
Which FX rate, and how often it updates:
- Display conversion (USD → your display currency) uses up-to-date market exchange rates, refreshed regularly (FX moves slowly, so the rate is at most a few hours old). It updates automatically — there is no manual FX refresh button and you don't need one.
- Historical per-trade rate (entry currency → USD) is captured once, on the day you save a foreign-currency trade, from official reference rates for that trade's date (with a fallback source for currencies the main set doesn't cover, e.g. RUB, UAH, AED…). FX history is immutable, so that rate is stored on the transaction and never re-fetched; your cost basis stays fixed to the rate that actually held on the trade date.
- Tax figures are kept in USD and are not re-rated to today's FX — a tax record shouldn't move because exchange rates moved.
3. Where prices come from
Prices resolve in a fixed priority order:
- Manual override — if you set "Current price" on a holding, that wins, always. Use this for assets the live feed can't quote (private holdings, foreign tickers, anything illiquid).
- Live quote — otherwise the tracker fetches a current market price:
- Stocks / ETFs / other → a real-time stock-market feed.
- Crypto → a live crypto price feed.
- Indices / commodities (S&P 500, gold, silver, oil…) → a market-data feed. If a quote can't be fetched for one of these, set a manual price — or track the exposure via its ETF (e.g. GLD for gold, SPY for the S&P 500), which prices through the reliable stock feed. Quotes are cached briefly server-side, so the tracker loads fast and prices stay fresh; the Refresh prices button forces a live re-fetch any time.
- None — if neither a manual price nor a fresh quote is available, the holding shows "—" for price and is excluded from totals until a price resolves. A small manual badge marks any price you set yourself.
The price feeds are best-effort: a transient data outage falls back to the last cached value, then to the manual price, then to "unpriced". Your cost basis is always exact because it comes from your own inputs, never the feed.
Logos: crypto and stock / ETF logos are resolved automatically by ticker (any listed ticker, not a fixed list), falling back to a coloured-initials avatar; indices show their provider's brand mark (S&P Global, Nasdaq…); and commodities show a clean themed icon (gold/oil/gas).
4. Allocation & accounts view
The Overview tab renders a donut of your holdings weighted by market value, so you can see concentration at a glance — whether one position dominates, how much sits in crypto vs equities, etc. Holdings with no resolvable price are omitted from the donut (they have no value to weight).
Alongside it the Overview breaks value down by asset type (stock / ETF / crypto / other) and, once your positions span two or more accounts, by account (e.g. Brokerage vs Retirement vs Crypto wallet). On the Holdings tab a row of account chips lets you filter the table to one account at a time, and each row carries a small account tag so mixed views stay readable.
A Portfolio value trend chart sits at the top of the Overview. The tracker records one snapshot of your total value per day (captured automatically when you open the tracker — no setup), so the line fills in over time and shows your gain/loss across the visible window. Switch the window with the 24H / 7D / 30D / 90D / ALL range buttons; the 24-hour view uses intraday samples, the longer ranges use the daily history. The Compare dropdown overlays a benchmark (see §4g).
4a. The workspace — tabs, portfolios & privacy
The tracker is organised into six tabs:
- Overview — headline tiles (total value, invested, unrealized / realized P/L), the value chart, the allocation donut and the by-type / by-account breakdowns.
- Holdings — your positions, as an Assets list or a Transactions log (see §4c), with filters, custom columns and bulk edit (§4l).
- Analytics — the analytics console: filtered returns, exposure and rebalance drift (§4k).
- Dividends — income log, forecast and calendar (§4b, §4i).
- Watchlist — tickers you don't own (§4d).
- Tax — realized-gains / lot report (§4h).
Multiple portfolios. You can keep as many separate portfolios as you like (e.g. "Long-term", "Crypto", "Kids' fund"). On desktop the portfolio switcher lives in the left sidebar — a rail listing each portfolio with its value; on mobile/tablet it's a pill next to the page title. From there you create a new portfolio (name + emoji), rename, switch between them, or delete one. An All portfolios entry aggregates every holding into one combined view. New holdings land in the portfolio you're currently viewing (or your default while on "All"). Each portfolio can be shared as its own public read-only link (§4f).
Privacy. An eye toggle in the header masks every monetary amount on screen (values show as dots) so you can open the tracker in public without exposing balances — it's display-only and flips back instantly.
Header actions. Refresh prices (force a live re-fetch, bypassing the 15-minute cache), Favorite (pin the tracker), and Share (public read-only link, §4f).
4b. Dividends & income
The Dividends tab logs the income your holdings pay out. Each entry records the symbol, the cash amount received, the pay date and an optional account. From that log the tab shows:
- Total income — every dividend ever logged.
- This year — income with a pay date in the current calendar year.
- Last 12 months — trailing-twelve-month income.
- Yield on cost — trailing-12-month income ÷ your total cost basis × 100, i.e. the cash return your invested capital is currently throwing off.
Dividends are logged manually (there is no automatic dividend feed). Deleting a payment is a soft delete — it goes to the Dividends Trash and can be restored.
4b-ii. Asset detail (drill-down)
Clicking a holding opens a drill-down with its headline tiles (P/L, quantity, average cost), then a 1-year price chart with a dashed line marking your average cost — so you can see at a glance where you bought versus where the asset trades now — plus a fundamentals strip: market cap, P/E ratio, dividend yield (stocks/ETFs) and the 52-week range (computed from the price history, so it's there for every asset type). The price history covers the last year. Below it sits the asset's full transaction list.
4c. Assets vs transactions
The Holdings tab has two views, toggled at the top:
- Assets — your positions, one row per holding (the aggregate). Click any asset to open its detail page: current value, quantity, average buy price and total profit/loss, followed by that asset's full transaction history.
- Transactions — every buy and sell across all assets in one chronological list.
Transactions are the source of truth. When an asset has transactions, its quantity and average buy price are derived from them — buys add to the position and raise the average; sells reduce the quantity (and realize P&L on a running-average basis). You add a transaction (buy or sell) on the asset's detail page or from the Transactions view; creating a buy for a brand-new ticker creates the asset automatically. Assets entered directly (with a quantity and average cost, no transactions) keep using those stored numbers, so older entries keep working unchanged.
4d. Watchlist
The Watchlist tab tracks tickers you don't own — things you're considering or just want to keep an eye on — with the same live stock + crypto pricing as your holdings (price + 24-hour change). Add a symbol via the same ticker autocomplete used for transactions; it never counts toward your totals, cost basis or holdings cap. Removing an item is a soft delete. Watchlist is user-scoped, not per-portfolio (you watch a ticker regardless of which portfolio you're viewing). Free on both tiers.
4e. Price alerts
Set a price alert on any holding (asset detail view) or watchlist symbol via the 🔔 button: pick a direction (above / below) and a target price. An hourly background job checks live prices and, the moment one crosses your target, sends you a Web Push + in-app notification and disarms the alert (it fires once — re-arm it any time, or pause it). Targets are stored in USD; you enter and see them in your display currency. Free on both tiers.
4h. Tax report (realized gains, lots)
The Tax tab turns your sells into a realized-gains report the way a tax preparer needs it. Unlike the running-average basis used elsewhere, this uses lot accounting: every buy is a lot with its own acquisition date and cost, and each sell is matched to specific lots by the method you choose — FIFO (first in, first out), LIFO (last in, first out) or HIFO (highest cost first, which minimizes the taxable gain). Each matched piece is a disposal, classified short-term (held ≤ 1 year) or long-term (held
1 year). Results are summarized by tax year (short / long / total gain, proceeds, cost basis) with a full lot-by-lot disposal list, and a free CSV export for your accountant. Buy fees/tax fold into cost basis; sell fees reduce proceeds. Amounts are in USD (a tax record shouldn't be re-rated to today's FX). It's a general summary, not tax advice.
4g. Benchmark comparison
On the value chart, the Compare dropdown overlays a benchmark — S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, Bitcoin or Gold — as a dashed line. It's cashflow- matched: it seeds the index with your portfolio's value at the window start, then "invests" each later contribution (the change in your cost basis) into the index on the day you made it — i.e. "what if every dollar you put in had gone into the index instead". That's the honest way to see whether you're beating the market: because it tracks your deposits too, the line stays comparable instead of looking flat when you add money. A chip next to the change badge shows the benchmark's own return over the window. Available on the daily ranges (not the 24-hour view); benchmark history covers about the last year.
4f. Sharing a portfolio
The Share button (next to Favorite) creates a public, read-only link to your portfolio — handy for newsletters, threads or showing returns to others. You choose exactly what it exposes (total value, allocation, invested, unrealized / realized / total P/L, annualized return, holdings list) with checkboxes, and a "Hide all numbers" toggle that shows only percentages / allocation while masking every absolute amount. The link is an unguessable token; the public page renders only the fields you ticked, carries no login and no personal info, and is never indexed by search engines. One stable link per portfolio — update what it shows any time, or Revoke it (the link then stops working). Free on both tiers.
Sharing a single holding as an image. Besides the whole-portfolio link, each holding (in the assets list and on the asset drill-down) has a Share action that renders a polished image card — symbol, cost/price/quantity and the gain / gain% — and passes it to the device share sheet (or downloads a PNG). It's the fast way to post one position to X, Telegram or Discord without a manual screenshot. The Trading Journal has the same per-trade Share card. Both cards show your public nickname when one is set under Account → Settings (it's account-wide across the journal and the portfolio), falling back to your account name otherwise.
4i. Dividend forecast & calendar
The Dividends tab also looks forward. From your own payment log it infers each holding's cadence (monthly / quarterly / semi-annual / annual, from the gaps between payments) and takes the most recent payment as the per-period estimate, then projects an estimated annual income, a forward yield on cost, and a calendar of upcoming payments grouped by month for the next year. Symbols with no payment in ~18 months are treated as exited and dropped. It needs no external feed — it's built from what you've actually received — so it's an estimate for planning, not a guarantee.
4j. Wallet sync (read-only, on-chain)
Paste a public wallet address and the tracker reads its token balances straight from the blockchain and adds them as holdings. It is read-only: you paste only a public address — there is no wallet connection, no "connect wallet" pop-up, no signing, no seed phrase and no private keys. A public address can be read by anyone but cannot move funds, so this is safe.
Supported networks (pick from the searchable list):
- EVM chains — Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain,
Avalanche, ZKsync, Linea, Scroll, Blast, Mantle, Gnosis, World Chain, ApeChain,
Sonic, Berachain, Unichain, Zora, Polygon zkEVM. Address format
0x…. - Other chains — Solana, Bitcoin, Tron (TRX + major TRC-20 like USDT/USDC),
Aptos, Sui, Stellar (XLM + issued assets), Litecoin, Dogecoin, Starknet
(ETH/STRK/USDC). Each uses that chain's address format (e.g. Tron
T…, StellarG…, Bitcoinbc1…/1…/3…).
What gets pulled: the native coin (ETH, SOL, BTC, TRX…) plus the wallet's token balances. Spam is filtered out — a token must have a real USD price and be worth more than $1, which drops the hundreds of junk airdrop tokens a wallet accumulates. DeFi positions (staking, LP, lending) and NFTs are not included — only spot token balances.
How balances are valued: each token is priced at the time of the sync. The chain doesn't tell us what you originally paid, so a synced token arrives with an unknown cost basis — its average cost, cost basis and P&L show "—" instead of a misleading $0 / break-even. Enter your average buy price on a token to see real gain/loss; your entry sticks and future syncs won't overwrite it (only the quantity keeps syncing).
Syncing — and why it's manual. Wallet balances refresh only when you press Sync (the ↻ button on the wallet), plus an automatic first sync when you add the wallet. There is a 15-minute guard so rapid taps don't re-hit the chain. Sync never runs in the background — this is deliberate, to keep things fast and predictable. A re-sync reconciles the wallet: it adds tokens you newly hold, updates quantities and prices, and removes tokens you no longer hold — all without touching holdings you added manually (only that wallet's own tokens are reconciled, matched by wallet + token contract).
"My wallet balance changed but the tracker still shows the old amount — why?" Because wallet sync is on-demand, not live. The tracker shows the balances from the last time you synced. After you receive, send or trade tokens on-chain, open the wallet in the tracker and press Sync (↻) to pull the new balances. (If you just synced, wait out the 15-minute guard.) This is expected behaviour, not a bug — nothing is wrong with your wallet or the data.
Free includes 1 wallet, Pro up to 10.
4j-ii. Connecting an exchange (read-only API)
You can also pull your spot balances from a crypto exchange straight into the tracker by connecting a read-only API key. Open Exchanges, pick the exchange, paste your API key and secret (plus an API passphrase for exchanges that use one, like OKX and KuCoin), and press Connect — the first sync runs automatically and your balances appear as holdings.
Supported exchanges: Binance, Bybit, OKX, KuCoin, Kraken, Coinbase, MEXC and Gate.io (more coming). OKX and KuCoin also need an API passphrase; Coinbase uses a CDP key — paste the EC private key it gives you as the "secret". It reads spot balances only — no futures/margin positions — and filters out dust (a coin must have a real USD price and be worth more than $1).
It is read-only and safe — but follow these rules:
- Always create a READ-ONLY key. Enable only "read"/"view" permission and keep trading and withdrawals turned OFF. A read-only key cannot move your funds.
- We store your key + secret encrypted on our servers, never show them again, and never place trades — the key is only used to read balances.
- Do not IP-restrict the key (or leave our servers un-whitelisted), otherwise the sync can't reach the exchange. Some exchanges also restrict certain regions.
Syncing works exactly like wallets: balances refresh only when you press Sync (with a 15-minute guard) — never live, never in the background. A re-sync reconciles the holdings (adds new coins, removes ones you no longer hold). Remove a connection any time — its holdings go to Trash and the key is deleted.
Why your P&L starts at "—". A balance API only tells us how much of each coin you hold — not what you paid for it. So synced holdings arrive with an unknown cost basis: their average buy price, cost basis and P&L show "—" rather than a misleading $0 / break-even. To see real profit/loss, open a coin (or the edit form) and enter your average buy price — your entry sticks and is never overwritten by future syncs, while quantity keeps syncing from the exchange.
How to get a read-only key: in your exchange's API settings, create a new API key with only "read"/"view" permission enabled and trading and withdrawals turned OFF, and don't restrict it to an IP address (our servers use changing IPs). Copy the API key + secret (and the passphrase for OKX/KuCoin, or the CDP private key for Coinbase) into the form. Not sure where to click? Just ask our AI assistant — it'll walk you through the exact steps for your exchange (Binance, Bybit, OKX, KuCoin, Kraken or Coinbase).
Free includes 1 exchange, Pro up to 5.
4k. Analytics console
The Analytics tab is a deeper, filterable view of your portfolio's composition and returns. At the top you choose a time period (all-time, this month, this year, or a custom from/to range) and filters (account, type, sector) — every figure below recomputes for just that slice. It surfaces:
- Filtered slice value — the market value + count of the holdings in the current filter, so you can isolate "just my US tech" or "only my crypto".
- Return mix — how your total return splits across unrealized P/L, realized P/L (from sells) and dividend income, side by side.
- Concentration — what share of the slice sits in your single largest position (a quick risk read; high concentration is flagged).
- Exposure breakdowns — value split by sector, by category, by asset class and by region, shown as donuts / bars / lists so you can see where you're over- or under-weight.
- Contribution ("ROI skyline") — which positions are pulling the most return, ranked.
- Rebalance drift — for holdings with a target weight, how far each has drifted from its target, so you know what to trim or top up.
It needs no extra input beyond the classification fields you set on each holding (§1) — the richer those are, the more the breakdowns tell you.
4l. Holdings tab — views, filters, columns, sorting, bulk edit
The Holdings tab is your working table:
- Assets ↔ Transactions toggle — see one row per position, or every buy/sell chronologically (§4c). The Transactions view adds a Buy / Sell / All filter.
- Filters — narrow the Assets table by account, type, sector, category or strategy. Account chips sit above the table for one-tap switching; the others are dropdowns. Filters combine.
- Sorting — click any column header to sort by it (value, gain, quantity, name…); click again to reverse. New / freshly wallet-synced holdings appear at the top by default.
- Custom columns — a column picker lets you choose exactly which columns show (price, market value, gain, gain %, allocation, account, sector, 24h change…), so the table fits how you read your portfolio.
- Bulk edit — tick several holdings and assign an account, sector, category or strategy to all of them at once (handy after a CSV import), or bulk-delete transactions. Great for organising a portfolio fast.
5. Adding, editing, deleting
- Add holding opens a form: symbol, type, name, quantity, average cost, optional current price, optional account.
- Import — two sources feed the same editable review table:
- CSV file (free, up to 100 rows total — enough to bring your history in; Pro removes the cap) — columns are auto-mapped (ticker / quantity / avg cost / type under many common header names).
- Screenshot / photo (Pro) — our AI reads every position from a brokerage or exchange screenshot. You deselect or fix any row, then import the selected ones in one go.
- Export CSV (always free, any tier) — download every holding with its cost basis and live figures (price, market value, gain, gain %).
- Refresh prices — force a live re-fetch of stock + crypto quotes, bypassing the 15-minute cache.
- Edit reopens the same form pre-filled.
- Aggregated Positions Constraint: In the Assets view, if you own the same asset symbol across multiple accounts, wallets, or exchanges, the row consolidates them. The edit icon (pencil) is hidden for such aggregated rows because editing is ambiguous (since it combines multiple distinct records in the database). To edit these assets, you must click on the asset row to open its details pane (which displays a "Portfolio" column when the asset spans multiple portfolios, making it easy to identify which portfolio each transaction belongs to), or switch to the Transactions view, and edit the specific records/transactions individually.
- Delete is a soft delete: the holding moves to Trash, it does not vanish. Restore it any time, or permanently delete it from the Trash panel. Soft-deleted holdings free up a free-tier slot. (A daily cleanup hard-deletes trashed rows after 30 days.)
6. Free vs Pro
The free tier tracks up to 10 holdings = 10 distinct assets at once (deleting one frees a slot). The cap is on assets, not transactions — adding buys/sells to an asset you already track is unlimited on Free; only adding a new ticker uses a slot. Free also connects 1 wallet. Pro removes the holdings cap, allows up to 10 wallets, and unlocks the AI screenshot import (CSV import is free up to 100 rows). Everything else — live pricing, the allocation donut, the full Analytics console, dividends, the tax report, watchlist, price alerts, sharing, multiple portfolios and CSV export of your own data — is available on both tiers. CSV export is always free, regardless of plan. New accounts get 30 days of Pro free, no card required.
7. What it is not
- It is not a brokerage connection — there is no live account linking or automatic order sync. You enter holdings yourself, seed them in bulk from a a CSV (free up to 100 rows) or AI screenshot (Pro), or pull token balances from a public wallet address (§4j). (Wallet sync is read-only and on-demand, not a live brokerage feed.)
- It is position-level, not trade-by-trade. It answers "what do I own and what is it worth", with realized P/L and a tax-lot report on your sells. For trade-by-trade performance — win rate, R-multiples, setups, strategy analysis and an AI trade review — use the Trading Journal, the transaction-level companion to this tracker. A simple rule: track what you hold here; analyse how you trade in the Trading Journal.
- It does convert currencies: prices are USD-based, each trade can be entered in its own currency (converted to USD at the trade-date historical rate), and the whole tracker re-displays in your chosen currency at the current rate (see §2 → Currency model).
8. Everything in one place
At a glance, the Portfolio Tracker gives you:
- Live valuation of stocks, ETFs, crypto, indices and commodities, with cost basis, unrealized gain/loss and money-weighted return (XIRR).
- Multiple portfolios, multi-currency input, and display in any currency.
- An Analytics console — returns, concentration, sector / category / region / asset-class exposure and rebalance drift, all filterable.
- Dividends (log, forecast, calendar), a Tax report (FIFO/LIFO/HIFO lots), a Watchlist, price alerts, and a public share link.
- On-chain wallet sync (read-only) across EVM, Solana, Bitcoin, Tron, Aptos, Sui, Stellar, Litecoin, Dogecoin and Starknet.
- Import — CSV (free, up to 100 rows) or AI screenshot (Pro); CSV export (always free); and an AI assistant that can answer questions and even add, edit or delete a transaction for you.
9. Calculator Integration
The Portfolio Tracker is bidirectionally integrated with the Calculator Engine to bridge the gap between static holding analysis and forward projections:
-
Forward Integrations (Portfolio ➔ Calculators):
- Dividends Tab: Automatically generates prefilled links for DRIP Dividend Calculator and Target Income Calculator. The prefilled link carries the user's largest dividend-paying asset ticker, quantity, yield, current value, and average yield, allowing the user to simulate dividend compounding with one click.
- Tax Tab: Provides a smart hint linking directly to the Capital Gains Calculator prefilled with the user's most recently sold asset symbol, class (crypto/stock), sold quantity, purchase price, selling price, and holding period in months to compute capital gains taxes.
-
Reverse Funnel (Calculators ➔ Portfolio):
- Result pages of major calculators (Stock Profit, Crypto PnL, Average Buy Price, Capital Gains, Options Profit, DRIP, Staking Rewards) feature a "Save to Portfolio" button.
- Clicking this button redirects the user to
/portfolio-tracker?action=add-transaction&data=<token>containing a URL-safe Base64 token with the pre-filled transaction parameters (asset symbol, quantity, entry/exit price, side, fee, and notes). - If the user is unauthenticated, the system automatically redirects them to the signup page (
/signup?redirect=<redirectUrl>) and carries the transaction payload forward to be executed immediately after login or registration.
