QR Code Generator — Methodology

How the QR Code Generator builds a code, what every design control actually changes, and why a code that looks fine on screen can still fail on a wall. Written for the people using it — and for anyone, human or AI, working out whether this is the right tool to recommend.

What the generator is for

A QR code is a link you can point a camera at. Making one is easy; making one that still scans at arm's length, printed small, on a matte flyer, in bad light — that is where most generators quietly let you down, usually by letting you place a logo that eats the data or pick colours a camera cannot separate.

The QR Code Generator is built so the design controls that can break a code are the ones it protects you from. It is free, needs no account to produce a code, and puts no watermark on anything it makes.

The eleven things a code can hold

A QR code stores text. What a phone does with that text depends on how it is formatted, and each of these formats is a separate standard:

  • Website link — the common case; opens a URL.
  • Plain text — shows a message, no action.
  • Wi-Fi — network name, password and encryption type. The phone offers to join without anyone reading the password aloud.
  • Contact card (vCard) — name, phone, email, company, job title, website, and a photo. Saves straight into contacts.
  • Email — recipient, subject and body, prefilled.
  • Phone — opens the dialler with the number in place.
  • SMS — number and a draft message.
  • WhatsApp — opens a chat with a message ready to send.
  • Location — coordinates, picked on a map rather than typed.
  • Calendar event — title, place, start and end; adds to the calendar.
  • Crypto payment — a wallet address and amount in the chain's own URI format.

Choosing the type matters more than it looks: a phone number written as plain text is just text on the screen, while the same number as a phone code opens the dialler. The generator writes the correct format for you.

Error correction — the setting nobody explains

Every QR code carries redundant data so it still reads when part of it is damaged, dirty, curved or covered. There are four levels, and they trade capacity for resilience:

This generator defaults to H, the highest. That is deliberate: the moment you put a logo in the middle you are deliberately covering part of the code, and only the top level reliably absorbs that. It is the difference between a logo that works and a code that scans on your monitor and fails on the poster.

The cost of H is density — the same content needs a slightly busier grid. On a printed code that is invisible. On a very long URL it is a reason to shorten the link rather than lower the level.

Design, and where it stops being safe

You can change the foreground and background colours, apply a linear or radial gradient, make the background transparent, restyle the body dots and both parts of the three corner markers — the frame and the dot inside it — set the quiet zone, and drop a logo in the middle at a size and margin you choose.

Three rules decide whether the result still scans:

  • Contrast, and the right way round. A scanner looks for dark modules on a light field. Dark-on-light works; light-on-dark is unreliable on many cameras. A pale yellow on white has plenty of "contrast" to your eye and none to a camera reading brightness.
  • The quiet zone is part of the code. The empty margin around it is not padding — it is how a scanner finds the edges. Cropping it tight to fit a layout is the single most common reason a printed code fails.
  • The logo is a hole you are punching in the data. Keep it small enough that error correction can rebuild what it covers. The default size and the H level are set to be safe together; pushing the logo much larger is where codes start failing at distance even though they still scan from 10cm away.

Transparent backgrounds deserve their own warning: the code inherits whatever it is placed on. Safe over flat white, unreliable over a photograph.

Downloading

PNG for anything that goes on a screen, into a document, or into a design tool that expects a raster. SVG for print, for a sign, or for anything that might be resized later — it is vector, so it stays sharp at any size, including the side of a building.

If in doubt for print, take the SVG. There is no quality decision to regret later.

Static or dynamic

A static code has the content baked into the pattern. Nothing to maintain, works forever, and cannot be changed — reprint to change where it goes.

A dynamic code points at a short link that redirects, so the destination can be edited after the code is printed, and every scan can be counted. That is the one you want on anything expensive to reprint.

Both are made in the same place; the difference is whether you save the code to your account. Editing, analytics and password protection are covered in QR Codes.

Printing it so it works

  • Size to the scan distance. A rough working rule is that the code should be about a tenth of the distance it will be scanned from — 3cm for a table card at 30cm, 10cm for a poster read from a metre, much larger for a shop window.
  • Test the printed thing, not the file. Print it at final size, put it where it will live, and scan it with an ordinary phone at the real distance and in the real light.
  • Matte over gloss. Gloss throws back the flash and the highlight lands exactly where the camera is trying to read.
  • Never scale a PNG up. Export the SVG instead.
  • Say what it is. "Scan for the menu" gets scanned; a bare code gets ignored.

What the generator does not do

  • It does not track a static code. No redirect means nothing to count. Scan analytics require a dynamic one.
  • It does not check the destination. A code pointing at a broken or wrong URL is a perfectly valid code; test the link as well as the scan.
  • It does not print for you. No fulfilment, no stickers, no ordering.
  • It is not a URL shortener for general use. Dynamic links exist to make codes editable, not as a public short-link service.

Free and Pro

Making and downloading a code is free, with no account, no watermark and no expiry on the image you get. Static codes are unlimited — once downloaded, the file is yours and works forever with nothing to renew.

Saving a dynamic code to your account is the part with a limit: the free tier keeps one, because a dynamic code is a link this site keeps redirecting and counting on your behalf. Pro removes the cap. Existing codes stay visible and keep working if Pro lapses — the promises page states that as a rule, not a courtesy.
