Canva, Adobe Express and a dedicated QR generator can all put a scannable square on a flyer. Before printing, that makes them look interchangeable. After printing, they are not.
Canva now offers both static and dynamic QR codes. Adobe Express says its generator creates static URL codes that never expire. A dedicated free generator can encode URLs as well as Wi-Fi credentials, contact cards, email, phone and plain text without routing the scan through a design platform.
The right choice is therefore not “which QR looks best?” It is which destination, owner and failure mode you want locked into the paper. This comparison uses current official product documentation, print math and a checklist for the file that actually reaches the printer.

Canva's official help page draws the sharpest distinction. Its static code has an immutable destination and no scan analytics. Its dynamic code uses a managed redirect, lets the owner update the destination without reprinting and exposes scan insights on eligible Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit plans. Canva also says static and dynamic codes cannot be converted into each other later.
Adobe Express's official FAQ says its generator produces static codes. They have fixed destinations, do not expire and currently accept URLs only. Adobe lets you customize the look and download PNG, JPEG or PDF, then continue editing in an Express project.
A dedicated generator separates code creation from page design. That is useful when a printer asks for SVG, when the payload is Wi-Fi rather than a web address, or when the designer should not own the destination infrastructure.
Static vs dynamicThe decision is made before the ink dries
A static code contains its payload directly. If it contains https://example.com/menu, every printed copy will decode that address forever, provided the pattern remains readable. The website can change what that stable URL serves, but the squares cannot be edited remotely.
A dynamic code contains a redirect address controlled by a service. The service looks up the current destination when someone scans. That enables editing and analytics, but also introduces an account, provider and redirect that must keep working.
Fewer dependencies after the scan
The pattern contains the destination or payload itself. No QR vendor must stay online. The tradeoff is permanent encoding: if the URL is wrong and you do not control it, the physical item needs a sticker or reprint.
Editable, measurable—and service-dependent
The pattern contains a provider redirect. You can change the final page and may receive analytics, but scans rely on the account, plan, redirect domain and provider policy after the material leaves the printer.
This is why “does the QR code expire?” is the wrong first question. A static pattern has no clock. It can still fail because the destination page moved, the domain expired or the print was damaged. A dynamic code can remain visually perfect while its redirect, ownership or plan breaks. Our guide to why QR codes stop working separates those failure layers.
CanvaBest when the code and layout belong together
Canva is the broadest option in this comparison because it now supports both architectures. For a static code, enter a URL, choose foreground/background colors and margin, then place it directly in the design. Canva says the link cannot be changed after creation and the static code does not include a Canva logo.
For a dynamic code, Canva allows destination updates without reprinting. Eligible plans can see total scans, unique scans, locations and device types; customize patterns and corners; upload or remove logos; set an expiration date; and allow collaborators to edit. Canva Free and Pro dynamic codes include the Canva logo by default according to the current help page, while removal or replacement is plan-dependent.
The operational trap is ownership. Design access is not automatically the same as QR control. Record which account created each dynamic code and who can edit it. A beautiful menu is not maintainable if the only redirect owner was a freelance designer whose account is gone.
Choose Canva when the team already designs there and needs one file for layout, proof and QR placement. Choose its static option for a durable URL on a domain you control. Choose dynamic when the print run is costly, destinations will change or analytics justify the extra dependency.
Adobe ExpressA polished static URL workflow
Adobe Express focuses on the simple path. Its official product page says you enter a URL, customize style and color, and download PNG, JPEG or PDF. Codes made by the generator are static and “never expire”: the embedded destination is fixed and the image itself has no subscription clock.
Adobe also says the generator currently handles URLs only. For Wi-Fi or contact information, it recommends a dedicated tool or a link to an online contact page. That limitation matters because encoding a Wi-Fi payload directly lets a guest join without your landing page, domain or hosting.
Adobe's design advantage is immediate access to Express templates and editing. Its infrastructure advantage is the absence of an Adobe redirect in a static code. Its limitation is the same as Canva static: after printing, the URL cannot be swapped. Keep the encoded address short, owned and intentionally permanent.
Adobe lists PNG, JPEG and PDF downloads. For pure QR artwork, avoid JPEG when possible because lossy compression can soften module edges. PNG is reliable for normal raster layouts; a print PDF keeps the whole composition together. Always inspect what your printer's export settings actually produced.
A dedicated generatorBest when portability matters
A QR Code Generator is the cleaner production tool when the design platform is incidental. Generate the code once, save the source payload in project notes and hand the same asset to Canva, Adobe, Figma, Affinity or a printer.
It also supports payloads beyond a URL:
- Wi-Fi network name, encryption and password;
- vCard contact information;
- phone, SMS and email actions;
- location, calendar or plain text;
- a direct URL with no managed redirect.
The tradeoff is that a free static generator does not magically add editing or analytics. If you need those, use a redirect you control or a clearly documented dynamic service. The best architecture is often a static QR pointing to a short URL on your own domain; your server can redirect that durable address while the printed matrix stays vendor-independent.
URL length changes the physical code
Adding UTM tags does not merely make the destination uglier. It can create a denser QR symbol with more modules, and every module must remain large enough to print and scan.

These are not universal minimum sizes. Camera, distance, paper, ink gain, logo coverage and lighting all matter. They show the direction: our 108-character campaign URL at high error correction used 57 modules, nearly twice the 29-module short URL. If both are forced into the same 20 mm square, every module in the long code becomes much smaller.
Canva recommends codes no smaller than 2 × 2 cm, strong contrast and a quiet zone four modules wide. Adobe also recommends at least 2 × 2 cm at close range and scaling with viewing distance. Treat 20 mm as a starting point, not a permission to place every dense code at 20 mm.
BrandingThe safest QR is often the least decorated
Color, rounded eyes and center logos can improve recognition, but every intervention consumes reliability margin. A code can look correct in an editor and fail after uncoated paper absorbs ink, a laminate reflects a ceiling light or an online printer downsamples the PDF.
Use dark modules on a light solid background. Preserve all four sides of the quiet zone. Do not place a texture, photo or transparent gradient behind the code. If a logo covers modules, generate with appropriate error correction and test the exact export at final physical size. Put the campaign design around the symbol rather than inside it.

A dynamic provider is not automatically worth $1,200, because a static code on an owned URL may be just as editable at the server layer. The table identifies the question: what would it cost if this exact encoded destination had to change?
For 500 cards pointing to a permanent portfolio, static is sensible. For 50 signs promoting a seasonal offer, use a short URL you control or a dynamic code with documented ownership. For regulated packaging, prioritize continuity and auditability over campaign analytics.
The print-proof workflow
Choose the architecture
Write down static direct, static owned redirect or managed dynamic. Do this before anyone styles the code.
Choose a durable payload
Prefer a short HTTPS URL on a domain the organization controls. Avoid temporary share links and personal accounts.
Generate and export
Use Canva or Adobe for an integrated design workflow, or a dedicated generator for a portable code and non-URL payloads.
Inspect the real file
Open the production PNG or PDF at final size. Check contrast, quiet zone, sharp edges and that no crop mark or background overlaps the code.
Print one physical proof
Use the intended stock, finish and printer. Scan from realistic angles and distances on more than one phone.
Record ownership
Save payload, final destination, code type, creator account, design file, print date and responsible person in the QR tracker.
Monitor after release
Scan a delivered item periodically. For dynamic codes, confirm the redirect account and fallback destination remain active.
A QR Codes Tracker is not only for analytics. It is the maintenance register that tells the next employee whether a code is static, who owns its destination and which physical items would be affected by a change.
VerdictChoose the dependency, not the editor
Choose Canva static when the design already lives in Canva and points to a permanent URL you control. Choose Canva dynamic when post-print editing or scan insights justify a Canva-managed redirect and your plan supports the features you need.
Choose Adobe Express when you want a branded static URL code inside the Adobe design workflow and PNG, JPEG or PDF output is sufficient. The current generator is simple, direct and URL-only.
Choose a dedicated free QR generator when you need Wi-Fi, vCard or another non-URL payload, want the QR asset portable between design apps or need a clean separation between code ownership and layout ownership.
Whichever editor you use, a short owned URL, protected quiet zone and physical proof matter more than the color picker.
Frequently asked questions
Does Adobe Express make dynamic QR codes?
Adobe's current official FAQ says Adobe Express generates static QR codes. Their destination is fixed after creation and the codes themselves do not expire.
Can Canva QR codes be edited after printing?
Canva dynamic QR destinations can be updated without reprinting. Canva static destinations cannot. Changing the visual style of a printed dynamic code still requires a reprint.
Which tool is best for a Wi-Fi QR code?
A dedicated generator. Adobe Express currently accepts URLs only, and Canva's documented native workflows center on URL destinations. A dedicated generator can encode SSID, encryption and password directly.
Should I use PNG, JPEG or PDF for print?
Use a sharp PNG for ordinary raster layouts or a print-ready PDF for the complete design. Avoid JPEG for the QR artwork when another format is available because compression can soften edges. Follow the printer's specification and scan a physical proof.
Can I add UTM parameters to a QR link?
Yes, but the longer payload may create a denser symbol. A short owned redirect can preserve campaign measurement while keeping the encoded URL compact.
